Statins and Heart Health

September is National Cholesterol Education Month— Statins are a powerful tool in managing cholesterol and preventing heart disease. Statins are a class of medications that effectively lower LDL cholesterol levels by reducing the liver's production of cholesterol. They are often prescribed when lifestyle changes alone don't bring cholesterol levels down to a safe range.

When Are Statins Needed? Statins are prescribed when lifestyle changes aren't enough to lower high LDL levels, particularly for those:

  • With cardiovascular disease

  • With very high LDL levels (190 mg/dL or above)

  • Diabetics aged 40-75

  • With 10-year risk of heart disease

How Statins Work:

  • Statins reduce cholesterol production in the liver, effectively lowering LDL levels.

  • They also stabilize plaque and reduce inflammation in arteries, lowering heart attack and stroke risk.

Managing Statin Therapy:
If prescribed statins, it's important to take them as directed and maintain regular follow-ups with your healthcare provider to monitor cholesterol levels and any potential side effects.

Common Side Effects:

  • Muscle pain or weakness

  • Digestive issues

  • Increased blood sugar levels

This September, take the opportunity to get your cholesterol checked, make healthy lifestyle choices, and discuss with your healthcare provider whether statins might be right for you.
