Concerned about RSV, Flu, or COVID-19

These three viruses are highly contagious. Each present with similar symptoms but can only be differentiated with testing. Infants, young children, older adults, and immunocompromised individuals are particularly at risk for severe cases.

Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV)

RSV is a respiratory virus that has a gradual onset and can produce mild cold-like symptoms. RSV peaks in the winter and can take 2 to 6 days after exposure for symptoms to develop and can improve within 1 to 2 weeks. There is no specific treatment for RSV infections, however you can manage symptoms with OTC nasal saline spray, humidifier, hydration, and medications to relieve fever. An antiviral prescription can be given for severe cases.

Influenza Virus (FLU)

Influenza Virus, the flu is a respiratory virus that typically presents with a sudden onset and severe symptoms. Most people have a high fever and body aches. The flu peaks from December to March and symptoms can last 1-2 weeks. Treatment for the flu is primarily rest and hydration. However, OTC medication can be taken for the fever and antiviral prescriptions can be prescribed to shorten duration.

Coronavirus (COVID-19)

COVID-19 is a respiratory virus that peaks in the winter and can present with symptoms 2-14 days after exposure to the virus. Mild cases can recover in one to two weeks, more severe cases can take six weeks or more. The FDA has authorized two oral antiviral pills for the treatment of COVID-19. The FDA has approved other therapies, but those are commonly used in more severe cases. Mild cases of COVID-19 can utilize rest, hydration, and OTC pain relievers to support healing and symptom management at home.
